INTRODUCTION

OCCURRENCE

Iron is a transition element. It combines with other elements to form compounds mainly in two oxidation states, iron II and iron III. Iron is the second most abundant metal after aluminium. The ores are haematite (Fe2O3), magnetite (Fe3O4) and siderite (FeCO3).

The ores of iron contain silica (SiO2) and aluminium oxide as impurities. The chief ore is haematite.
