Introduction

The central processing unit (CPU) is the portion of a computer system that carries out the instructions of a computer program. It is sometimes referred to as the computer´s brain. However, unlike a human brain, it can´t decide what to do for itself and must follow a program where someone has decided what the permitted actions are. The CPU carries out each instruction of the program in sequence, to perform the basic arithmetical, logical, and input/output operations.
