To test for hydrogen gas evolved, insert a lighted splint into the test tube. The lighted splint should extinguish with a characteristic "pop" sound. Note that if there is insufficient hydrogen gas, the flame may not be completely extinguished. There must be enough hydrogen gas. A mixture of hydrogen and air burns explosively
