While collecting specimen for study,consideration on what kind of apparatus to us is absolutely important. There are many types of apparatus depending on the size, nature( dangerous, poisonous,delicate etc) of the organisms.
Below is a set of common apparatus used for capturing specimen.
Sweep nets
Used to collect flying insects such as butterflies,mosquitoes,bees,grasshoppers etc
Pooter
Used for picking up very small animals e.g termites,bed bugs from bark of trees, rock crevices and other hidden places.
Suck through mouthpiece (end of which is covered with muslin) and the animal is taken into jar through the hose.
Pitfall trap
Jam jar buried in ground and covered with raised flat stone.
Used to collect ground surface animals insects, nocturnal and diurnal e.g. spiders, centipedes, woodlice, beetles, etc.
Bait Trap
For attracting and capturing small animals such as moles,squirrels,rats and mice.
Fish Net
Used to collect small fish from pools and streams.
Pair of forceps
For picking up small,delicate,stinging insects,animals or plants.
Specimen Bottle
For keeping collected specimen. The size of the bottle depending on the specimen. Some are filled with a preserving fluid called formalin.
