Lets ponder on this.. What is the importance of classifying organisms. What significance is classification in the study of Biology. Feedback The science of classification is known as Taxonomy. Classification is the grouping of living organisms based on their structure. At different levels of common structures the organisms are placed under one group called Taxon (Plural - taxa). Taxonomy also factors in Phylogeny ( the evolutionary relationships) since all organisms at one time had a common origin. Biologists who study classification are called taxonomists. When the organisms are grouped, they are also assigned names using a scientific method called binomial nomenclature ( two names). Here below is a list of the major reasons why classification is necessary in biology. Groupings bring together living organisms with similar characteristics but separates those with different structure. Helps to understand the evolutionary relationships between organisms. Helps in placing living organisms into correct groups for reference. Helps us arrange the information about living organisms in an orderly manner to avoid chaos and confusion that would arise if this were to be done arbitrarily.
