-          It was established in 2010 with the New Constitution.

-          It came up to replace the Independent Interim Electoral Commission (IIEC).

-          The IIEC was formed as a body to facilitate the referendum of 2010.

-          This is because the Electoral Commission of Kenya had been disbanded with the 2007 disputes of the election results.

-          The IIEC also carried out all the by-elections prior to the 2012 National General Elections.

-          A person is not eligible for appointment in IEBC if within the past 5 years, he/she was in office or campaigned for the following position in an election.

• A Member of Parliament or County Assembly.
• A member of the ruling body of any political party.

-Holds any state office.
