River deposition

  • If sediment gets moved to the lower velocity part of the stream, they will be deposited.
  • What may cause river deposition?
  • There is not enough water to transport the load (dry season)
  • A river flows across a desert where there is a high rate of evaporation.
  • A river flows across permeable rocks which allow water to infiltrate into the underlying rocks.
  • A river carries a larger load than it can transport.

Depositional features

Meanders.

  • A meander is a bend in a stream. Meanders grow both laterally and in the down stream direction.
  • A point bar forms on the inside bank of a meander and rising from the channel as an accumulation of alluvium

Braided channels

  • a wide and shallow channel consisting of a tangled network of diverging minor channels separated from each other by low sandbanks and islands of alluvium.
