River deposition
- If sediment gets moved to the lower velocity part of the stream, they will be deposited.
- What may cause river deposition?
- There is not enough water to transport the load (dry season)
- A river flows across a desert where there is a high rate of evaporation.
- A river flows across permeable rocks which allow water to infiltrate into the underlying rocks.
- A river carries a larger load than it can transport.
Depositional features
Meanders.
- A meander is a bend in a stream. Meanders grow both laterally and in the down stream direction.
- A point bar forms on the inside bank of a meander and rising from the channel as an accumulation of alluvium
Illustrations of meanders.
Braided channels
- a wide and shallow channel consisting of a tangled network of diverging minor channels separated from each other by low sandbanks and islands of alluvium.
