A metaphor is a figure of speech in which something is described in terms of another, which has some of the qualities of what is being described e.g. A strong woman may be called a lioness.

A simile is on the other hand a figure of speech which compares one thing to another by using words like 'as' or 'like' e,g a tie as red as blood,a heart like a stone.
