INTRODUCTION

Carbonates are types of salts whose anion is a Carbonate CO32- . The cation is from a metallic or ammonium radical. Different metals have got different reactivity thus the Carbonate salts they form have various stability when heated. Breaking of various salts on heating is called Thermal decomposition.

Case Study

Consider heatingĀ  5.0 g of barrast stones at 80oc and in a different setup heat 5.0 g of sugar at 80oc. Its expected sugar will melt after a few minutes while stones will take indefinite time for any change to be noted.

1). Why do you thing sugar takes few minutes to melt, while barrast stones remain intact?

2). In terms of thermal stability, which one between sugar and barrast stones is stable?
