Metalic Carbonates break when heated to form metal oxides and Carbon (IV) oxide gas i.e
Metal Carbonate → Metal oxide + Carbon (IV) Oxide
However, not all metal Carbonates decompose, and those that decompose take varied time before they decompose depending on their position in the reactivity series. The release of Carbon (IV) Oxide is confirmed by passing it through lime water(Calcium hydroxide) which turns milky(forms white ppt ) in the presence of Carbon (IV) oxide otherwise remains colourless if absent. This is also the official test for the presence of Carbonates CO32-
This is demonstrated in the video next page.
