Rationale

We are living in a world with millions of substances having properties vastly different from one another.

Atoms are held together (bonding) and are arranged in space (structure) that accounts for the quite distinct properties of different substances.

When elements form compounds, they either lose, gain or share electrons so as to achieve stable electron configurations.

This simple idea forms the basis of electronic theory of bonding.
