• It occurs when waves go round an obstacle or through a slit.
• When the width of the aperture is nearly equal to the wavelength of the waves, the wave fronts emerge as circular waves.
• This time the wave fronts spread out in all directions from the aperture.
• The waves are said to be diffracted at the aperture.
