LESSON DEVELOPMENT-ACTIVITY 1

Activity 1

To understand the concept of rotation, observe the video below

A rotation is a type of transformation that takes each point in a figure and rotates it a certain number of degrees around a given fixed point. The fixed point in which the rotation takes place is called the center of rotation. The amount of rotation made is called the angle of rotation. The direction of rotation canbe clockwise or anticlockwise.

An object and its image are the same shape and size .e.g The Earth experiences one complete rotation on its axis every 24 hours.ize..

For any rotation, we need to specify the center, the angle and the direction of rotation.

Centre of rotation

The center of rotation is the point that a shape rotates about.

The image below shows a shape rotated about the center of rotation with Cartesian coordinates (3, 3).

  Example  1

  Describe the rotation shown below.

Find the center of rotation.

In our example, the Cartesian coordinates of the center of rotation is (3 ,3).

Using a protractor or otherwise, find the angle the shape has been rotated.

The angle is 120° clockwise
