ACTIVITY 1

IDIOMATIC EXPRESSIONS

Read the following and note down the Idiomatic Expressions explained.

An idiom is an expression whose meaning is difficult or sometimes imopossible to guess by looking at the meanings of individual words it contains.e.g it is raining cats and dogs has absolutely nothing to do with cats and dogs.

Idiomatic expressions are fixed and should not be altered.e.g inĀ  He is seen once in a blue moon can not be substited for other words.

The meaning of some idiomatic expressions can easily be inferred.e.g He was caught between a rock and a hard place means he was in a difficult situation. However, some idiomatic expressions are more obscure and require a good grasp of the language and extensive exposure to it.e.g WE HAD A BALL AT THE DISCO means we had really good time.
