Activity 1:Definition

Ø  An adverb phrase is a word group with an adverb as the main word.

Ø  An adverb phrase can modify a verb, an adjective, or an adverb.

 Like adverbs, we have adverbial phrases of manner, contrast, condition, purpose,

      reason, degree and result.

      Below are two examples.

(i)           He kept the cup in the cupboard.

         ‘In the cupboard’ is an adverbial phrase of place.

(ii)        She woke up at 8. O’clock.

         He saw her running very fast

                                       (Adv. Manner)

Activity 2:Constituents of Adverb Phrases

An adverb phrase can consist of:

v  An adverb

v  Pre modifier, which can be an adverb, adjective, or a preposition.

v  Post modifier

Activity 3:Adverb Phrases Examples

  1. Quite slowly

Quite is the pre modifier, while slowly is the adverb

2.On Friday night

Pre modifier is the preposition on . night is the post modifier 

Examples in Sentences

  1. The project was done very slowly.
  2. We talked all day long.
