INTRODUCTION

  • Naturally occurring substances may contain several pigments. For example, green grass, leaves, flowers, and fruits.
  • Procedure for obtaining extract from a leaves.

    • 1. Crush some green leaves in a mortar using a pestle.
    • 2. Add propanone or ethanol as you continue crushing the leaves
    • 3.Decant the extract into a beaker.
    • 4. Using a dropper place one drop of the extract at the centre of the filter paper and allow it to spread as far as possible.
    • 5. Add a second and third drop at the same spot. Each time allow the extract to spread as far as possible.
    • 6. Once the spot of the extract has stopped spreading, add the solvent dropwise each time allowing the solvent to spread.
    • 7. Continue adding the solvent until it spreads out close to the edge of the filter paper
