Loop of henle
The glomerular filtrate flows into the loop of henle from the proximal convoluted tubule.
The wall of the descending limb is highly permeable to water and solutes allowing for water to be reabsorbed by osmosis.
The wall of the ascending loop of henle is relatively impermeable to water, hence as the filtrate flows in it, water is not reabsorbed but instead salts are actively pumped out making the filtrate less concentrated.
The flow of the glomerular filtrate down the descending limb and up the ascending limb creates a counter-current system in the loop of henle. This ensures that the concentration gradient remains high and hence increases the rate of reabsorption of water by osmosis at the descending limb.
Discuss the process of counter current flow
