Photosynthesis Virtual experiment

Virtual Laboratory Activity- In this lab, you will be experimenting with how different variables affect the rate of photosynthesis.

Cloze Activity

Try out the Experiment apparatus - Thermometer for temperature, lamp for light intensity    , Gas container  for Carbon (IV) oxide concentration  and Stopwatch for timing respectively Thermometer, LampGas containerTimer

Set the thermometer to 25°C (Room Temperature) and the light intensity to 20 and lowest CO2 concentration Lowest CO2

Test 1- Effect on CO2 concentration.

  1. What were the bubbles per minute at this setting? bpm
  2. Now increase the CO2 available to the elodea. What were your bubbles per minute? bpm
  3. Based on your data, how does the amount of available CO2 affect the rate of photosynthesis?

Test 2- Effect of temperature on the rate of photosynthesis

  1. Keep your settings from 9c (25°C, light intensity of 20, increased CO2).
    1. What were the bubbles per minute at this setting? bpm
    2. Now increase the temperature to 40°C. What were your bubbles per minute? bpm
    3. Based on your data, how does an increase in temperature affect the rate of photosynthesis? An increase in temperature increases the rate of photosynthesis

Test 3- Effect of Light intensity

  • Return to your settings from 9c (25°C, light intensity of 20, increased CO2).
    1. What were the bubbles per minute at this setting? bpm
    2. Now decrease the light  to 10 units. What were your bubbles per minute? bpm
    3. Now increase the light  to 30 units. What were your bubbles per minute? bpm
    4. Based on your data, how does a decrease in temperature affect the rate of photosynthesis?
  • Alter the variables in order to determine which combination leads to the highest rate of photosynthesis. Which combination of settings produced the highest number of bubbles per minute?
    a. Temperature: b. Light:
    c. CO
